Hello, today I will be discussing the slowness of your recently updated blog. Let me guess, it’s slow after you updated to WordPress 2.7.
Before you do anything, you need to upload a blank WordPress installation, and it must be the same version that is slowing down your site. Run through the installation, taking careful notes on the speed of each page load. Do not install the WordPress with the same table prefix (PREFIX_TABLE NAME) as your main WordPress installation. Once you reach the end of the installation, and you have entered in the blog title, does it slow down? It may just a little, but is it greatly slow? If so, then you know it is your server, because it is only slow once you load your WordPress into your SQL database.
If it is just as fast, then it is either a theme or plugin on your main WordPress that is causing this.
If it is slow, then just read right on.
Why is it slow? Let’s go over everything that I can think of that could be causing this…
SQL Corrupt Tables 1 Every-time you update your WordPress, you are not only changing your tables in your database, but adding to them to. In other words, so while you may be replacing most of your tables, you are additionally just adding new ones, increasing the table’s contents which therefor may decrease your website speed. How can I prevent this? There is not much to prevent, which is the annoying part. You may find some method, and feel free to share it if you do.
SQL Corrupt Tables 2 Keep in mind your website is not the most stable website in the world. Heck even FaceBook and YouTube crash every now and then, so don’t be surprised when I say: one of your tables may be corrupt. Corrupt? Yes, corrupt. Corrupt tables will decrease the speed in which your PHP script runs. What’s the best way to fix this? I cannot assure you that this program is easy, friendly, and trust-worthy, but my search results tell me that this one is the top-of-the-list website (on Google): Stellar Phoenix Database Recovery.
Plugins & Themes If your website runs fine in the admin panel and in non-WordPress parts of your site, then you may have a bad plugin or theme. Some themes may have too many WordPress tag requests. Too many? There is never to many! Maybe not on your site, but there may be for somebody else. Besides, there is no harm in checking. Your theme may also include images that are large in size. Here is what you need to do, get the plugin called: WP-Tuner. Google it to find it. Install it, and then activate it. Scroll down and look at the blue box. This shows you what is slow. No, not all of it is slow, just anything highlighted in yellow. Anything in yellow should be deactivated to increase website speed.
Cache I’m sure this is not the first time you have read about this. All I will say is that it may or may not help. Download the plugin WP-Super Cache and activate it and see how it all turns out.
Thank you for reading and hope it helps,
Gray

I just installed Wordpress 2.7 and noticed that the admin pages are very slow. The rest of it seems to be OK. Just the admin stuff is dreadfully slow. I have used Wordpress in the past and it was always respectable when it came to speed. My understanding is that version 2.7 focuses mainly on administrative improvements. I agree that the admin panel is better than previous versions, but the significantly slower speed hardly makes this much of an improvement. Hopefully, it will get faster as it is updated. Which, given that I just installed 2.7 tonight, should be in a few days (kind of like how it rains when you wash your car.)

Same issues here at http://www.mountainbikingnewzealand.co.nz
Odd thing is that it happens using Firefox- but Safari and all other browsers are ok. Very odd indeed.

Paul,
This could be that the other browsers have absorbed more of the content on your site than FireFox making the website’s load speed ‘increase’. Try clearing your cookies, history, etc. on your browsers and then view the site.

I tied clearing cookies etc and no joy. In the end i turned off each plugin one by one until it fixed it. The plugin that was causing my issues was the “upgrade automatically” plugin. As soon as i turned it off…. my problem was fixed.
It was only happening in firefox mind you
All fixed so i’m happy.
Cheers for the tips.
